To be able to choose the correct rod and reel combination, you first need to decide what you want to fish and where you want to fish. This way you can ensure your buy the correct equipment for your needs.
You can choose from many different weights of rods but the two most popular tend to be the 5 weight and the 8 weight. The 5 weight is more of a general purpose, all round combo and the 8 weight is used more for the bigger, heavier fish you intend to catch.
Buy the 5 weight if you intend to fish for bluebill, trout and pan fish. Don’t spend money on heavy fly fishing combos if you are not intent on catching bigger, heavier fish.
If on the other hand you do intend to go for bigger fish (e.g. salmon, pike and snook) then the 8 weight combination will be the better rod and reel for you as this will be able to handle the heavier fish.
Gaining an understanding of what and where you intend to fish will help you spend your money more wisely and ensure that you end up with the correct fly fishing combo.
